Stories on the Monetary Economy – Solar Power (Self-Sufficient Energy)

As we approach a "Great Depression"—a crisis that has historically recurred every 100 years due to the limits of debt—those who steer the global monetary and economic system are facing a profound dilemma.

In a Great Depression, the widespread bankruptcy of nations, corporations, and individuals could cause 50% to 60% of the total money supply (M2) to vanish. This would lead to a rapid evaporation of market liquidity, rendering essential energy consumption activities impossible.

In short, there would be a critical shortage of the monetary liquidity required to access energy sources such as nuclear power, oil, and natural gas.

This is why solar power—which allows for energy self-sufficiency without the need for monetary expenditure—has emerged as a solution. If solar infrastructure can be established in every nation before the onset of a Great Depression, countries could overcome a potential currency shortage by relying on self-sufficient energy.

So, how can we build this global solar infrastructure at a low cost to help us navigate a Great Depression?

The answer lies in leveraging the production capacity of China, which has long served as the world’s "subcontracting factory."

Thanks to China, the rest of the world has been able to build solar infrastructure at costs even lower than the actual production price—a trend that has persisted for over 17 years.

However, a new problem has emerged: due to China’s underdeveloped monetary policy framework, the country is now facing exhausted interest-rate flexibility and an increased risk of a financial crisis. Consequently, China can no longer sustain its role as the world’s factory.

To address this, a new strategy has been introduced: policies designed to support the growth of non-Chinese polysilicon producers (such as OCI Holdings and Wacker) and manufacturers of solar energy products (such as Hanwha Solutions). Therefore, the future of global solar policy—and the survival of companies through a potential "Great Depression"-style economic crisis—will hinge on the extent to which non-Chinese solar firms can grow and displace their Chinese counterparts.

Furthermore, as illustrated by the chart showing low-cost solar polysilicon prices, the price of polysilicon is bound to converge toward its "fair value"—a level dictated by the growth in the money supply (M2). From an investment perspective, this means that in an environment characterized by a weaker dollar and high inflation, the solar sector offers one of the most effective hedges against inflation.

Ultimately, by entering the market early—before large-scale institutional capital floods into the solar sector—individual investors can secure a significant strategic advantage.

This is precisely why solar energy stocks should be a core component of your investment portfolio.
